Category Hierarchies

A category hierarchy expresses the collection of subordinate categories into a superordinate category. The subordinate categories are specialty categories that satisfy the more general characteristics of the superordinate category.

Psychologists recognize a special level of category referred to as a basic level category. In natural speech, people tend to use the basic-level category name. Basic-level categories are those that best map to prototypical examples. Basic-level categories make the best candidates for user interface names.

Categories that are more subordinate than the basic-level category are said to be subordinate categories. Similarly, categories that are more superordinate than the basic-level category are said to be superordinate categories.

Example: Parrot is a category of Bird.

Parrots are differentiated by larger beaks and bodies and feathers which are of bright colors.
